CBD EBSA Illustrations (by GOBI)
Description
These sites are locations that have been identified as potentially meeting one or more of the CBD criteria for Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas (EBSAs). These illustrations were developed by the Global Ocean Biodiversity Initiative (GOBI) and partners (GOBI website). They are intended as illustrations only, and to provide scientific and technical guidance to Contracting Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in the application of the criteria.
Background to CBD EBSAs:
In 2008 in Bonn, Germany, the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity adopted a set of seven scientific criteria to identify ecologically and biologically significant areas (EBSAs) in the global marine realm. Using the CBD EBSA criteria to identify specific ocean areas that require enhanced protection can thus help to achieve a variety of conservation and management objectives. Practical illustrations relating to species, habitats and oceanographic features are described for each of the seven criteria as examples of various scientific methods and techniques relevent to each criterion.
Metadata
Methodologies used per illustration include a review of scientific literature, expert opinion, remote sensing and field observation data, tracking data, models, indicators, marine trophic indices and comparative analyses.
